Inverkip Power Station was conceived while oil was cheap, but rocketing oil prices meant it never saw full service, only being maintained as a back-up when the miner's strikes were at their peak in the '80s. Work started on the power station in 1970, and power generation ceased completely in 1988. The chimney is one of the highest in Britain at well over 700ft.
